Which Gaming Wheel Should I Get?
Sim racing wheels start from just $50 and go up to over $2000 so it depends on how much you are willing to pay for a wheel, whether your just a casual racer or a serious opponent who wakes up early just for a race.
I've put 'categories' so its easier to navigate for your ideal gaming wheel arranged from least expensive to the most expensive
Casual Gaming
these don't usually come with a clutch
Logitech MOMO Force Feedback Wheel -For PC
|
' Greater control with realistic shifter and foot pedals&em;designed by the pros at MOMO® Design.' |
This wheel is a wheel that a 'new' racer or even a casual gamer should get. With both Paddle Shifters and a Sequential Shifter (which is rare for a wheel at this price) this wheel was missing only one thing that a hardcore/serious racer needed, a clutch. With 11 programmable buttons this is a cheap but quality gaming wheel that sadly is no longer for sale but is available on eBay for around $50 (

Thrustmaster Universal Challenge Racing Wheel -For PC, PS3, Xbox, Wii
|
'
The best-selling racing wheel is now a "5-in-1", fully programmable device ' |
With 17 programmable buttons the Universal wheel is quite a good value for a product that sells for $56 (
Link to Store) .This wheel has 2 paddle shifters at the back of the wheel and 2 pedals that suppose to be slip-proof, with the standard PS3 buttons it is capable of almost everything and even can replace an official PS3 controller!
Most reviews of this wheel are negative, would not really recommend this.
Genius Speed Wheel 5 Pro -PC, PS3
|
'
the fancy design steering wheel offers an excellent sporty feel ' |
With only 10 programmable buttons, I really don't know what you can actually do with this wheel. By the
picture that Genius put on their website, it looks like who ever's going to use this wheel must have really flexible feet. Also Genius has made the wheel incredibly sporty by adding what looked like a racing accident onto the wheel (The person who designed this must have balls of steel to make it look like this)For $67 its a maybe (

Logitech Formula Vibration Feedback Wheel -For PC
|
'Own the pole position' |
Twins to the Logitech NASCAR Racing Wheel, this wheel is one that I have owned so therefore this will be one of the longer comments. With 16 programmable buttons this wheel can perform well in most areas, from driving in a simple simulation game (Like
Rigs of Rods for instance)to a more intense racing game when failures are not an option (Like
iRacing and
rFactor 1&2).The wheel is very smooth and produces relatively no noise so is a must for an early morning racer however the design that fits on your lap has an issue of 'lifting off' your lap when you turn the wheel to its full rotation to one side and can cause your some issues and as well with the common failing to centre in-game even though the steering wheel is fully centred (Which leads to having to reset the controls in the settings of the game)For sale (or used to be for sale) for only $88 I think
this one is a bargain.
Genius TwinWheel FXE VFB Leather (black) -For PC
|
'foldable design helps to save space and it provides seven different angle adjustments.' |
Again, this isn't the best looking wheel on the market, but Genius has decided to stick a fake iPod Nano to a wireless wheel that looked very close to a Wii Wireless Wheel. Except that they now have only 10 programmable buttons (Yay!) and what looks like a staircase on their foot pedal base. With a wild attempt to be different Genius have modified the brake and accelerator pedals respectively to a ear-less dog's head and a upside down foot which showed the whole world how they like to design their products(Notice what looks like a smile on their picture?)At $91 this is one strange wheel to buy (

Genius Wireless Trio Racer -For PC, PS2, PS3
|
'Its 2.4GHz RF wireless technology provides wireless distance up to ten meters ' |
Very nice to have your wheel on on side of a room and your display screen on the other, but who actually needs it? Further commenting on the rather strange design of the wheel, it looks like if your hold the wheel by the bottom for too long it can give you 2 cramps at a time. Foot pedal design yet again didn't find the right person but instead found a speed bump designer. Total of 11 programmable buttons and a price tag of $91 get it if you really want to (

Logitech Driving Force Pro -For PC, PS2, PS3
|
'Logitech Driving Force Pro is a wheel that perfectly complements the games it was designed for' |
As the successor of the highly successful MOMO, we couldn't expect less of this wheel (it comes with a $149 price tag when launched as well). But basically what we received was a bit disappointing. If you haven't figured out already this wheel looks a darker twin to the Logitech Formula Vibration Feedback Wheel except that it now has a sequential shifter as well as the paddle shifters on the back of the wheel (which added 2 programmable buttons to the list) and to be honest, for close to twice the price of the Formula VFB Wheel its a bit dark and gloomy just like the colours of the wheel. You will occasionally see one on for sale on eBay (
Link to eBay) This wheel is replaced by the Logitech Driving Force GT which you can actually buy in a store.
Logitech Driving Force GT -For PC, PS3
|
'It’s like you’re behind the wheel of a real racecar with 900-degrees of wheel rotation' |
As the successor of the Logitech Driving Force Pro this wheel had a lot to make up for and it did. With new function buttons (a total of 19 programmable buttons now)that are actually useful, the Logitech Driving Force GT is a solid wheel in almost every area and even comes with a solid price of $249.95 by Logitech but we've found a store called CrazySales for about half the price (

Hardcore Gamer
these come with clutches and usually aren't cheap
Thrustmaster RGT Force Feedback Wheel -For PC, PS3
|
'
The 5-axis wheel with Clutch pedal' |
This wheel only exceeded the Logitech Driving Force GT by one aspect, the clutch and by sacrificing 6 dollars and a bit of wheel size you end up with a wheel that is truly durable and 'stylish'. Even all the foot pedals are adjustable, from width in between the pedals to the pedals themselves (you can flip them, replace them with only about 30 seconds of your time). But however on the downside gaming with a 25cm wheel is a bit like driving a well greased 1970s Formula 1 car... and the foot pedals are wide but not wide enough so you could accidentally apply brake and accelerator at one time leading to the issues that helped Genius make their wheels. Overall, its a good value for $150 and you probably won't regret it(except for the big guys) (
